Description

Valentino, the Woodsman of Wandering Faith

Early Life
Valentino Legnani of Volvestre is a 38-year-old woodsman, a man shaped by the whispering forests and the quiet vigilance of the Faith. Born in Volvestre, he grew up under the shadow of ancient trees and the glow of hearth fires, where life followed the slow, sacred rhythm of the Faithful Lands.

From his earliest years, Valentino felt most at home beneath the canopy. He became a skilled tree feller, swinging his axe with respect rather than haste, taking only what the forest allowed. Over time, he mastered the craft of fletching, fashioning arrows sought after by hunters and local militias. Though he never bore arms as a soldier, Valentino supported every war effort Volvestre faced—donating arrows, preparing provisions, and offering nightly prayer for the safety of those who marched.

His hands grew capable in many trades. He learned mining in shallow veins, enough cooking to sustain a small household, and simple tailoring and leatherworking to clothe himself and his family. This made him a valued figure in Volvestre—dependable, humble, and steadfast in faith.

But it was faith, twisted by zealotry, that destroyed everything he loved.

The Inquisitors
Whose ironbound doctrine and merciless “purification” had begun creeping across the lands, arrived in Volvestre under the guise of rooting out heresy. Their judgments were swift, cruel, and often unfounded—yet none dared oppose them openly. Rumors had long circulated of their suspicion toward forestfolk, claiming those who lived too closely with nature might harbor forbidden practices or commune with unseen spirits.

When the Inquisitors came to Valentino’s village, his family was accused of harboring “unguided souls” and failing to adhere to strict ritual observances. No proof was offered; none was needed. The Inquisition rarely sought truth—only obedience. By the time the torches dimmed and the last shouts faded into the night, Valentino’s home had been reduced to charred timbers, and his wife and children lost to the flames.

He survived only because he had been deep in the woods that day, felling oak for winter stores.

He returned to ash.

He buried what little remained, prayed over ground still warm with embers, and swore a silent vow—not of vengeance, but of endurance. To continue living would be his defiance. To remain devout without falling into the Inquisition’s cruelty would be his strength.

Moving Forward
Unable to remain among ruins and echoes after rebuilding, Valentino set aside the life he once knew. With only his remaining tools, his cloak, and his faith—battered but unbroken—he left Volvestre. He wanders now through the Faithful Lands, seeking fellowship, for no man survives long alone in a world where shadows move beneath the trees and zealots roam the roads.

His hope now points toward Lavedan, a region whispered of as rising anew—where clans gather, where homesteads are defended, and where community still holds strong against the tightening grip of the Inquisition. Travelers tell of people building, crafting, harvesting, and protecting one another. A place where a man with skills and a loyal heart might finally be welcomed.

Valentino prays this is true.

For he does not seek vengeance—only a place where the forest is peaceful, the hearth is warm, and no Inquisitor’s torch ever again steals the people he loves.
